Small Business Resources

Procurement Toolbox

Below are resources such as downloadable vendor forms and links to important procurement resources. Resources include the System for Award Management (SAM) website, Procurement Technical Assistance (PTAC) website, and the Federal Procurement Data System website

Federal Procurement Data System

Government agencies are responsible for collecting and reporting data on federal procurements through the Federal Procurement Data System–Next Generation (FPDS-NG)The federal government uses the reported data to measure and assess the impact of federal procurement on the nation’s economy, learn how awards are made to businesses in various socioeconomic categories, understand the impact of full and open competition on the acquisition process, and address changes to procurement policy. Contracting Officers (COs) must submit complete reports on all contract actions, as required by the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR).

The Small Business Administration (SBA)

Created in 1953, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) continues to help small business owners and entrepreneurs pursue the American dream. The SBA is the only cabinet-level federal agency fully dedicated to small business and provides counseling, capital, and contracting expertise as the nation’s only go-to resource and voice for small businesses. https://www.sba.gov/about-sba

Procurement Technical Assistance Center

The Procurement Technical Assistance Program (PTAP) was authorized by Congress in 1985 in an effort to expand the number of businesses capable of participating in the government marketplace. Administered by the Department of Defense, Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), the program provides matching funds through cooperative agreements with state and local governments and non-profit organizations for the establishment of Procurement Technical Assistance Centers (PTACs) to provide procurement assistance.

Visit the PTAC website.

DUNS Number Registration

The D-U-N-S Number has been referred to as the “Social Security number for businesses.” In reality, it’s even more pervasive than Social Security. The system is used in dozens of countries around the world, in addition to the U.S., including Australia, and the European Union, and confers numerous benefits on businesses that participate. The business credit file associated with your business’s D-U-N-S Number can help potential partners and lenders learn about your business and make informed decisions about whether or not to work with you as a client, supplier or partner. Even after you’ve signed a contract or accepted a loan, your D-U-N-S Number can be used to help get a clear view of your business, which can help you negotiate for improved terms and conditions or a favorable line of credit. Apply for a DUNS number here.

System For Award Management (SAM)

The System for Award Management is an official website of the U.S. government. There is no cost to use SAM. You can use this site for FREE to:

  • Register to do business with the U.S. government
  • Update or renew your entity registration
  • Check status of an entity registration
  • Search for entity registration and exclusion records
    Visit the SAM website here.
